The 5 Fingers of Aging:
The 5 Fingers of Aging:
In 1996, Dr. E. Ronald Finger built The New Youth Medical Spa, a Savannah, Georgia day spa, upon the solid foundation of Finger & Associates’ 33 years as one of the preeminent plastic surgery practices in the Southeast. Savannah’s New Youth Medical and Day Spa works in symbiosis with Finger & Associates to endow our patients with premium skin care treatments and medical and day spa amenities in a clean, professional, and relaxing environment. The New Youth Medical & Day Spa offers everything from our exclusive New Youth Skin Care Treatment System, to relaxing massages, Tri-active treatments, Titan ™ laser skin rejuvenation, the Laser Genesis and other skin care treatments specifically designed to aid in the preparation and recovery of plastic surgery patients.
Savannah’s day spa and medical spa patrons enjoy premium skin care treatments and include visitors from day spas in Jacksonville, Atlanta, Charleston, Hilton Head, Macon, Georgia, and beyond. A visit to the Savannah Day spa offers our clientele a relaxing opportunity to enjoy the very best in professional skin care treatment combined with perhaps a visit to Savannah’s famed historic district homes, parks, squares, and tours.
The goal of Savannah’s Medical and Day Spa and of New Youth Skin Care Treatment System is basic – to create healthy and beautiful skin with synergistic nutrients and ingredients. Because of the multiple ingredients and transport systems required to meet this end, a system of layering several products is necessary. Each skin care treatment ingredient works to enhance the other and yet each ingredient also stands on its own as a vital tool in rebuilding skin cells and returning your youthful vitality.
Dr. Finger’s research led him to the conclusion that there were five major factors that hastened the aging process, each of which could be combated via cellular nutrition and the space age biotechnology breakthroughs of modern medicine. He referred to them as the Five Fingers of Aging. In his own words, Dr. Finger explains how these five assaults on the skin’s integrity contribute to the aging process:
Free Radicals –- the 1st Finger of Aging
"Free radicals” were first discovered in the 1950’s. We humans are a product of oxidation – we burn oxygen to live. We are each a collection of 100 trillion microscopic cells that all use oxygen to produce heat, which is converted into chemical reactions, motion, thought process, and much, much more. That’s the good part of oxidation. But there is a downside. Just as a burning match produces heat but also smoke and ashes, our oxidation process produces undesirable byproducts, known as free radicals. Because these free radical molecules lack an electron, they steal electrons from various parts of our cells. Each cell is ‘hit upon’ for this electron-theft thousands of times a day, ultimately damaging its different parts and causing it to function less efficiently. Simply stated, free radicals are toxic chemicals that damage our cells. The result of free radicals is a degenerative cell structure that increases aging and can even lead to cancer."
“Glycation” or glycolization is a seldom mentioned result of metabolism called the Second Finger of Aging. Glycation is a process that results in an abnormal bond between sugar and protein molecules and between protein molecules themselves. The glycation process is an abnormal bond resulting in a sticky molecule which is very difficult to break. The name of these microscopic substances is quite prophetic – called AGEs. These AGEs, or Advanced Glycation End-products, attach to large proteins such as collagen, elastin (elastic) fibers, and other large molecules. Think of the elastic fibers of your skin as bungee cords and the AGEs as a sticky substance, like honey, being applied to this bungee cord. Eventually the bungee cord will be saturated and unable to contract to its original length, causing your skin to sag with age. Glycation is, by the way, also involved in hardening of the arteries, called arteriosclerosis, causing heart disease, hypertension, strokes, kidney disease cataracts and other arterial diseases.
The ultraviolet light that we receive from sunlight is a result of energy traveling in various wavelengths. The most damaging wavelength is called UV-B. Unfortunately for us, only a small percentage of this wavelength is absorbed by the ozone layer. UV radiation with a longer wavelength is called UV-A. These longer wavelengths are not considered quite as dangerous as UV-B. The vast majority of skin cancers are a result of UV-B. Our DNA and other large biological molecules absorb UV-B and UV-A, causing photochemical reactions. Therefore, it is critical to both health and the retarding of the aging process that we protect our skin from this damaging ultraviolet light. The rest of the story is pollutants, harsh chemicals, soaps and diet. Do not underestimate the effect of diet on all of the Fingers of Age. The most effective sun blocks contain zinc or titanium.
“Inflammation” is linked to aging in a major way. A February 2004 issue of Time Magazine devoted its cover story to the dangers of Inflammation and how the medical community is focusing on its many dangers. Inflammation is both a cause and a result of the process of aging. Inflammation is involved with heart disease, kidney disease, small vessel disease (arteriosclerosis), arthritis, stomach and intestinal problems, Alzheimer’s and other chronic disease entities, so only a few organ systems, if any, are given a reprieve from inflammation. Inflammation is involved heavily in disorders of the skin, including cancer. When focusing on skin disorders, inflammation is the next Finger of Aging to be dealt with. As a matter of interest, our original New Youth night cream began as an anti-inflammatory cream in 1996.
Our modern lifestyle and high simple carbohydrate–low fat diets actually damage DNA. A simple carbohydrate, like sugar, white bread, pasta, and white potato, is one that goes rapidly into the blood system without having to be broken down. Diabetics have blood sugar that is too high and insulin levels that vary between normal levels and high levels that are potentially dangerous. High insulin levels, like sugar, are particularly damaging to our cells and cause increased free radicals, the glycation end products (AGEs), and inflammation. This imbalance also damages our DNA, our building blocks of life. This causes mutations in which the genes are copied incorrectly while dividing and replicating. DNA is the blueprint for our metabolic functions. Can you imagine building a house with a continually changing blueprint? When you consume excess simple carbohydrates, you also have excess blood sugar much like a diabetic for a period of time. This can cause an increase in small vessel disease, heart disease, stroke, etc. In that sense, sugar is a toxin.
Regarding fats, good fats are necessary for life. Those would be unsaturated fats, especially Omega–3 fats from seafood, avocado, and certain nuts. Mono saturated fats such as olive oil are also healthy for us. Avoid trans fats and saturated fats as much as possible. Our brains are 60% fat. Cell membranes are made of fat. We cannot live without them.
The New Youth Skin Care Treatment System is a program that addresses all Five Fingers of Aging, free radicals, glycation, environmental damage, inflammation and DNA damage, with the exception of number five. That one is determined by your diet although our ingredient Uncaria Tomintosa has been shown to repair DNA. There are additional synergistic ingredients and nutrients in New Youth that turn back your skin’s clock which will be evident within a week of its use. The bottom line of New Youth Skin Care Treatment System is healthy skin, and healthy skin always looks younger and more rejuvenated.
