According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, more than half of the people in America are said to either be undergoing cosmetic surgeries, and over 9.3 million surgeries have been performed in the United States. Plastic surgery is pervasive, everywhere you turn there’s a glut of information on TV and the news. Some information is correct and often times it can be misleading. We hope to provide you with the information you need to decide what’s right for you.
One of the most popular procedures performed by plastic surgeons these days fall under the category of body contouring. Body lifts, tummy tucks, liposuction, mommy makeovers – all of these procedures are classified as body contouring.
Every day I see patients walk through the doors who want to refine their shape for different reasons – many are moms who have given birth and want to reclaim their pre-baby shape, others are people who have had gastric bypass surgery and want to remove the skin and fat, and the last vestiges of their heavier self. And still other relatively slim patients see me about localized pockets of fat that no amount of gym time can ameliorate.
There are so many options in the field of body contouring that pop up on the radar constantly. Trendy fads with cute names, such as tickle me lipo or rolling massage devices, these trends may come and go, but traditional liposuction using tumescent solution has withstood the test of time. Not everyone uses this solution, but they should. It’s the safest, it yields the best results. It’s not trendy, but it works.
Usually, liposuction is right for people who aren’t considerably overweight, but just have stubborn pockets of fat they’ve had difficulty getting rid of. For people who have lost much more weight and have excess skin, we may consider a body lift. Sometimes we combine these procedures, and sometimes we tell our patients that a procedure may not be right for them. There’s no cookie cutter approach to body contouring, because each of our patients is different.
When you’re considering plastic surgery, I encourage you to see past the gimmicks and ask me or any plastic surgeon on staff any question you may have about body contouring. Dr. Finger will even respond to your questions within 24-48 hours. So tell us what’s on your mind. We want to hear from you!
